Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Traditionally, tipping is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, in practice, many people tip on the total after tax — especially when using apps or card terminals that calculate the tip percentage for you. The difference is small: on a $50 meal with 8% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax gives $10, while post-tax gives $10.80. Either is acceptable.

Is it rude not to tip?

In the United States, tipping is a cultural expectation in service industries where workers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips for most of their income. Not tipping (without reason) is considered rude in US restaurant culture. In other countries like Japan and some parts of Europe, tipping is not expected or even discouraged. Always research local customs when traveling.

How do I split the bill unequally?

This calculator splits the bill evenly. For unequal splits (e.g., someone ordered more), calculate each person's individual share first, then use this tool for each amount to get their tip. Or use the total bill amount and calculate the tip, then divide individually based on what each person owed.

What is the easiest way to calculate 20% tip in your head?

To calculate 20% mentally: move the decimal point one place left (this gives 10%), then double that number. For a $47 bill: 10% = $4.70, doubled = $9.40 tip. For 15%: calculate 10% and add half of that (5%). For $47: $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05 tip.

Do I tip on the bill total or per item?

Always tip on the total bill (or subtotal before tax), not per item. Tipping is a percentage of the overall service experience, not a per-dish fee.
